Putting his weight behind Shahid Afridi to succeed Younis Khan as Pakistan Twenty20 skipper, former skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq on Thursday said that he backs the swashbuckling all-rounder to wear the captain’s armband in the shortest version of the game.
The Pakistan selectors are yet to name the successor of Younis Khan, who decided to quit Twenty20 cricket after leading Pakistan’s team to the World ICC Twenty20 win last month in England.
"I would back Afridi because he has performed outstandingly in the World Cup and he enjoys this form of the game. In addition, he has proven himself leading the Karachi and Sindh teams in domestic cricket," Inzamam said.
“It was very important that whoever led Pakistan was a good performer himself and leads by example”, the former middle-order batsman said.
Afridi was named the Man of the Match in the semi-final and final of the ICC World Twenty20 guiding his team to win the title.
“We must not forget that we have just nine months to prepare for the defence of our title in the West Indies next year," Inzamam added.
Afridi has earlier expressed his desire to lead his country in T20 format.
On Younis Khan’s decision to quit Twenty20, Inzamam said: "I would not say whether he took the right decision or not. But the fact is it is his decision and it must be respected."
